DEFINITION
Authorized Signer
An authorized signer is an individual who has been granted permission to perform certain banking activities on the behalf of the account holder. Examples
A small business owner who is often out of town designated the office manager as an authorized signer. Now even if the owner isn’t in town, the manager can perform actions such as write and sign checks to pay vendors, buy needed supplies, or take team members out for dinner. However, the office manager cannot close the account nor can he designate himself as the new owner.
FAQ
What is the difference between an authorized signer and a joint account holder?
While an authorized signer can manage transactions on the account, they do not have any ownership rights. In other words, if the owner were to pass away, the authorized signer would not retain their rights to the account. A joint account holder on the other hand can both manage transactions and has ownership status.
Can an authorized signer be held responsible for the account’s debts or overdrafts?
Since authorized signers don’t have ownership status, they typically aren’t held responsible for account debts or overdraft. However, they are expected to act with permission of the account holder and can be held accountable for performing any fraudulent activities.
How can an authorized signer be added or removed from an account?
Adding or removing an authorized signer will typically require the account holder to go to their respective bank. There they will need to fill out specific forms and provide written authorization to add an authorized signer and just written documentation to remove an authorized signer.
